A funny, true story from the Saturday Night Live book (forget the author).
Franken and Davis were supposed to write the famous "Nixon Watergate" sketch for Saturday. It was late Friday night and they couldn't think of anything. Finally, they decided to dose in the SNL offices late at night. They acted out the whole sketch on acid (Franken as Henry Kissinger) roaring with laughter until they had the sketch, complete with the talking portrait of Lincoln "because you're such a dip".
A bit of history from an old fart.
cheers,
Dr. Flashback :0)

all of those SNL memories are great. I recently watched my old VHS copy of NYE 1987. It's so funny watching Tom Davis get completely hammered as the night goes on. At midnight he's yelling at Kesey because he lost the list of names that were on the float. It's priceless.

I remember one of those New Year's broadcasts with Kesey and Father Guido Sarducci doing the call at midnight. There were people wearing giant papier-mache' masks made to look like the musicians, and Kesey was raving like a mad man: "LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, THIS IS AMAZING---THERE'S WAGNER! . . . " Father Guido was much more in control: "No, that's Jerry Garcia."

just watche the videos. What's with Weir's pants? It looks like he's wearing shin guards or something. Or is it just an optical illusion?

Who remembers the boys doing "Good Lovin" and --I think--Casey Jones, on SNL in '78? I might be wrong about the Jones, but I remember the Good Lovin.

Hey Grendel--never did have a chance to say how I appreciated your position piece a few weeks ago ('where are you left or right' or some such); well said. We may get up on different sides of the DEAD 'era' bed, but we are in agreement on a number of issues, I am sure...

Yes, most defn they did C Jones...think G Lovin, but can't get it to fire up in 'recall'...

I think it was Casey, Miracle and Lovin'. Couldn't find Lovin', but here are the other two:

Oh Yeah! The Casey Jones was Smoking.
I was like twelve when they played SNL tried to convince my Mom to let me go to see the Dead but she heard about someone falling out of the balcony at MSG, oh well.
Jerry is looking freaky good.
Gotta love Weir on the slide.
Still think Donna is Hot!

It was most definitely Casey Jones that they chose to represent themselves with, in what was at that time a very rare appearance in front of a national audience. I'm at work, so I'm unable to view the YouTube clips, but Miracle>Good Lovin' rings a bell as far as their second slot for the show that night. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that Lorne Michaels was not interested in booking them, however he caved in to pressure from Belushi and Aykroyd. They came back a couple of years later with Alabama Getaway, but it escapes me what the other song or songs were for that gig. Sailor>Saint probably would have ran too long, but Saint of Circumstance could be it. And wasn't that the one with Weir donning bunny ears because it was the eve of Easter Sunday?
